Can You Trust the Tobacco Companies...

Sure, this is a loaded question. It's a lot like asking whether politicians can be
trusted. We all think we know the answer. But for the sake of argument, just play
along and pretend like you don't know the answer already. Then we'll get to some
more stop smoking help.

Any horse racing fan will tell you, that you have to look at track records to see if there
is any documentation or evidence. So the question is, did big tobacco ever place
their own interests ahead of the health of their customers? In other words, did they
know their products caused harm and if so, did they let anyone else know? Okay,
okay, hang in there with me while we flesh this out.

Cigarette smoke has this component known as radioactive polonium 210 [(210)Po].
Yeah, it sounds kind of nasty, huh? So radioactive has always meant something
bad, and we probably shouldn't be inhaling it in our lungs, so says my intuition.
Nicotine and Tobacco Research published an article that analyzed the internal
secret documents made available by the
Master Settlement Agreement of 1998.
Sounds like cold-war stuff. So what did these documents say about (210)Po?

It seems as if big tobacco was aware of this radioactive substance, all the way back
in 1959. Lets see now, that would be 52 years ago! They go on to tell us that tobacco
companies knew of the potential for cancerous growth in the lungs of smokers and
even estimated long-term radiation absorption doses given off in cigarette smoke
emission. The calculations were surprisingly accurate, stating that inhaled tobacco
would cause about 130 lung cancer deaths per 1,000 smokers annually. That's an
amazing 13% death rate among smokers for lung cancer alone. Now you know why
we want to give you some

According to the research report, in 1980, they discovered that an acid wash of the
tobacco leaves effectively removed the (210)Po. Great, problem solved, that is if acid
washing didn't have that darned unwanted side-affect. Apparently, it ionizes the
nicotine, reducing its take-up in the brain. Without the addiction, people would stop
smoking and their profits would sink, so they opted to avoid the whole process
altogether.  

So if this was known in 1980 and then became public in 1998, then why isn't acid
washing done today? Probably the same reason as before and there isn't enough
energy to push the issue. So the poor people who smoke, continue to bare the
burden of their addiction.
